Simon the Spearmint Gum
I was resting in my pack, anticipating the day I will be
chosen. All of my friends had been picked up the day prior. I think I was so
late in being selected because I was laying in the back of the pack. I am a
spearmint, with a touch of vanilla, my friends and I were born into a variety
pack. Bianca the Bubble gum, and Giovanni the Grape, were still with me. But Wanda
and Wilbur wintergreen were the first to go.
Bianca started to speak, “Hey Simon, You are the last
mint, I think that she is going to take you next!” She said to me.
“Really? You think so?” I asked her, hope glimmering in
my wrapper.
“”I sure do! I can feel the box wiggling… EVERYONE GET IN
POSITIOOOOON!!!!!” She screamed and we all went still.
I looked up and saw the takers, she seemed to be
contemplating which piece to take. I posed in my most mouthwatering pose, and
waited. Her fingers reached out and grazed both Bianca and Giovanni. Then she
touched me. She picked me up, and then took me out of the box, closing it
behind me. I felt both nervous and exited at the same time. I had only met one
other gum that had been chewed… He said it was wonderfully amazing. She took
off my wrapper and stuck me into the chewer.
I felt what we learned were the molars, and I got in
between them, like the factory instructor had ordered us to do. I rubbed my
mintiness everywhere I could, and cleaned all of the food off of her teeth. I
continued to do this while she was at what I can assume was school.
I had been working for about an hour now and I was
starting to get tired. But as my labor wore off I heard another voice speak to
my taker. This one was male. I saw that she and I were getting awfully close to
where I saw his chewer. Then, oddly enough they exchanged chewers, and I slid
into the male’s mouth!
It
was much dirtier in here and it smelt awful. I thought about trying to work in
here, but I was much too tired to actually make any progress, plus, I had used
all of my minty powers on my taker.
After
a very short period of time I could feel his chewer gathering me, with his tongue,
until he threw me out! I was soaring. I could feel the cool air all around me.
That is until I hit the bottom. I was
stuck to the ground. I couldn’t move. Add to the fact that I was beginning to
expand into the creases of the cement. Then I began to panic. I started
shouting for help, but nobody came.
After
many hours I saw a shadow approach me. The foot of the shadow was coming
awfully close. I tried again to move out of the way but it was useless. Then I got
squashed. With each step the taker took I lost a small part of myself. The
agony went on for around 5 blocks. But by then it was too late, I had been
rubbed away.

Hi Glenda!! How is your day going? let me start by saying i think this whole piece is super funny and i really enjoyed the perspective of the gum instead of like a human. You used very hysterical imagery that grabbed me in and pulled me into the piece as someone who is witnessing this whole story in person. I really enjoyed this story, keep up the good work and i hope i can read more of these types of stories.
ReplyDeleteGood morning Glenda!
ReplyDeleteOut of the other pieces I've read, yours was very unique. I bet nobody in the class has anything like it which is very refreshing. I really liked how you personified the gum and took the reader on an adventure I'm sure they've never been on before. I love how you described the girls mouth as opposed to the guys. The ending of your story really left the reader wanting to know the stories of the other pieces of gum.
I can't wait to read more of your stories!
Laura
Aye, Glenda, This was seriously one of the funniest stories i have ever read. The way you humanized the gum and told their stories was actually really interesting. The way you gave them a job as to apposed to them just being chewed for pleasure was very creative and i enjoyed it. i really look forward to what you'll come up with next.
ReplyDeleteThis is imaginative, taking on the voice and persona of an inanimate object and bringing it to life (for a while at least, until it's "rubbed away"!).
